Devotion for Monday, July 19, 2010

Scripture - Some children were brought to Jesus so he could lay his hands on them and pray for them. The disciples told them not to bother him. But Jesus said, “Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them! For the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to such as these.” And he put his hands on their heads and blessed them before he left. - Matthew 19:13-15

Observation - The hearts of children are unlike any other and their perspective on life is something to cherish. Jesus welcomes the children, welcomes their faith and acknowledges that truly ‘the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to such as these’. The disciples may have lost track of the importance of the children and their faith, but were clearly reminded as they tried to keep the kids away. Jesus welcomed them, prayed for them and blessed them.

Application - Even though this story refers to children, age is not the most important thing. The level of faith and trust is what concerns our Lord the most, to have faith like a child and to trust like a child is what Jesus is looking for. It’s so easy to lose sight of that simple, Christ-centered mind-set in the whirlwind that is our life these days.

Prayer - Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for the children of Haiti. Thank you for their survivor hearts, thank you for their relentless spirits and thank you for the love that pours out of them so freely. We ask your blessing and protection on each and every one of them. We ask for healing and salvation, and that each one would come to know in the most personal way. Let the Haiti that they grow up in allow for vibrant ne life to sprout from the rubble. Lastly, thank you for the reminder that the faith you seek in us, is SIMPLY that of a child. Amen.
